It is said that modern papermaking originated in China at about 105 AD, when the Chinese court official, Cai Lun used plant fibres, fishnets and old rags to create paper. Before then, bone and bamboo had been used to create paper. This paper was primarily used as padding to protect mirrors and poisonous medicines. Using paper as a writing medium only became popular by the 3rd century.
By the 6th century, paper was used as toilet paper too. Throughout the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD) paper was used to make square bags that preserved the flavour of teas. Tea was also said to have been served in “multicoloured paper cups”. Then in the Song Dynasty (960-1279 AD), the government used paper to make printed money for the first time in history.
