Do you fancy making your own biodegradable plant pots and saving money gardening at the same time? These pots made from recycled newspaper break down in the soil, which allow the plant roots to push down and settle into the soil. They’re easy to make too, as they only require newspaper (black and white only) and a drinking glass/jar.
- Detach a single black and white newspaper page (if it’s a double page, then tear it in half down the middle). Don’t use coloured pages.
- Fold your piece of paper into a strip, by folding it in half lengthwise, twice.
- Lay down the glass/jar on it’s side, with only the top half of it resting on one end of the paper.
- Slowly roll all of the paper around the glass/jar.
- Cram the top of the paper into the jar/glass opening.
- Remove the newspaper from the glass/jar. It should now be shaped like a pot with an untidy bottom.
- Next, insert the bottom of the glass/jar into the newspaper pot, and lower them on a flat, hard surface, applying pressure on the glass/jar from the top (open end) so that the untidy newspaper pot bottom is flat. This will allow it to contain soil, but then easily open when the plant roots push through it.
- Finally, tug the glass/jar out of the pot, and now your pot is ready to use.
