If you’re feeling a bit arty, want to do something constructive and have a spare hour or so, then you could attempt to make your own desk blotter. A desk blotter is a practical desk accessory that can add life to any desk area. If you make your own, you can make it exactly the way you want it to look. All you need are: a foam core, a utility knife, wrapping paper (2 patterns/colours), clear tape, scissors, card stock, tape measure, a pencil and a glue stick.
- Cut out a 22-inch by 12.5-inch rectangle from the piece of foam core with the knife.
- Choose one of the wrapping papers and cut out a rectangle with dimensions of 24-inches x 14.5-inches. Wrap it around the foam core’s back and firmly tape the edges down with the clear tape.
- Use the tape measure and a pencil to measure out 2 pieces of card stock with dimensions of 12.5-inches x 3.25-inches. Cut them out with scissors.
- From the other piece of paper, measure and cut out 2 14.5-inch by 5.25-inch rectangles, which will be used to wrap around the pieces of card stock.
- Place a card stock rectangle on the edge of the shorter side of the foam core.
- Attach the card stock to the foam core by wrapping the tape around the front of the card stock and the back of the foam core around several times.
- Do steps 5 and 6 again with the other card stock rectangle.
- With the glue stick, stick down the card stock rectangle’s inner side.
- Align the 2nd piece of wrapping paper along with the edge of the card stock and carefully wrap it around the board to the back, smoothing the paper down along the top, bottom and side edges. Firmly fix the edges with tape.
- Do steps 8 and 9 again with the other card stock rectangle.
If you end up messing up your desk blotter though, don’t worry, you could always buy one!
