Paper boarding passes on airplanes to disappear

The aviation industry’s move towards a ‘paperless future’ has led to the elimination of the paper boarding pass.

Airlines have announced that a new system to board aircraft will be used- passengers’ mobile phones will be read by scanners at the departure gate. This comes after the development of scanners that can read various airlines’ codes.

It is hoped that this will increase the efficiency and ease of boarding airplanes (known as “simplifying the business”) at departure gates, as many passengers currently spend time rummaging through their bags and pockets searching for their pass. This system reduces delays in the boarding process and therefore the queue length, making customers more satisfied.

British Airways is the first airline to make this system available for Heathrow-Edinburgh flights using iPhones. This application not only acts as a boarding pass, but can also contain flight information, check-in times, and in time, boarding gates. BA’s boarding pass began at the beginning of this month, and within the next 6 months, should be available for all domestic routes and destinations.

As for the other major “smart phones”, Android and Blackberry, the application will be available to them in a couple of months.
