US paperboard production decreased by 10.6% in 2009

The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) has released a new report presenting data for 2009’s paper and paperboard industry in the US. The figures in The Statistical Summary of Paper, Paperboard and Wood Pulp (2009) show a fall in total product production by 10.6% to 79.1 million tons.

AF&PA’s Chief economist, Dr. Stanley Lancey said, “These results reflected the effects of the economic downturn on the paper and paperboard industry in the United States.” However, he also reported that the first half of 2010 saw  the US’s paper and paperbound industry grow by 8.6%.

Other figures within the report include:

  • Paper and paperboard exports declined by 10.9% to 13.million last year
  • Imports fell even further, falling by 20.5% to 13.4 million tons. Overall, it is a positive result.
  • In the first half of 2010, exports were steadily increasing while imports remained level, so the trade balance is predicted to remain positive throughout 2010.
